About Eeny
Why I Built Eeny
Section titled “Why I Built Eeny”Like many developers, I was part of an agile team with daily stand-ups. When our project lead got pulled away by other priorities, we decided to rotate the meeting host duties among everyone.
We tried using external randomization sites, but it had problems: we never knew who was spinning, sometimes multiple people would spin, and we couldn’t tell if results were being manipulated. Some team members got picked constantly while others rarely came up.
Around the same time, I was looking for a hobby project and started exploring the Slack API. The stand-up problem felt like the perfect challenge, so I decided to build something that could pick a random team member right inside Slack. The first versions were rough, but they worked. Word spread to other teams, and as I saw how people actually used it, I kept adding the features they requested.
Eventually, I realized this simple tool was solving a common problem beyond just stand-ups. I made Eeny publicly available, and now hundreds of teams use it for everything from meeting hosts to deciding who makes the coffee.
