Custom Responses

Custom responses replace the wording Eeny uses to announce a pick. Out of the box Eeny says “Hey @Sam, you’re up!” or “@Sam, it’s your turn!”; with custom responses it can say “Today’s meeting host: @Sam” or “Coffee run courtesy of @Sam :coffee:” instead.

Custom responses are set separately for each channel, list, and Slack group. Open them with the Custom responses button:

  • Channel: @Eeny manage in the channel
  • List: @Eeny manage Awesome People or @Eeny show Awesome People. The button is also on the message Eeny posts when you create a list.
  • Slack group: @Eeny manage @engineering

Press Add to add a response, type your wording, and press Save. You can add up to 5 responses; Eeny uses one of them at random for each pick.

Each response:

  • Must include the word USERNAMES. Eeny replaces it with the picked person, or with everyone picked when you pick more than one — for example “@Sam, @Alex, and @Jo”.
  • Can be up to 75 characters long, and can include emoji.

To go back to Eeny’s own wording, Remove every response and press Save.

Eeny uses the responses of the channel, list, or group the pick came from:

  • @Eeny pick uses the channel’s responses
  • @Eeny pick Awesome People uses the list’s responses, wherever the list is picked from
  • @Eeny pick @engineering uses the group’s responses

They don’t fall back to each other: a list without custom responses uses Eeny’s own wording, even in a channel that has some.

Custom responses are used for picks, pick again, Pick me volunteers, and rotations. Shuffle lists everyone rather than announcing a pick, so it doesn’t use them.

Deleting a list also deletes its custom responses.
